Jason Michael Colley, 43, has been charged with second-degree child abuse and second-degree assault following a joint investigation into his actions in Frederick, though he is no stranger to both sides of law enforcement.
Colley served 10 years with the Fairfax County Police Department in Virginia, though he later found himself on the other end of things following the death of his 6-month-old daughter in Maryland in 2017.
Frederick County Department of Social Service-Child Protective Services tipped off MSP to the alleged physical abuse of a child, authorities said. The nature of the abuse has not been disclosed by state police.
An investigation found charges should be filed against Colley, who was arrested at his Frederick home without incident, authorities announced on Thursday, June 15. Officials noted that investigators do not believe that any other minors were injured or in any danger.
Last year, the former officer pleaded guilty to two counts of assault and was sentenced to eight years of home confinement after agreeing to an Alford plea, where he maintained his innocence but admitted that he was likely to be found at fault if he went to trial.
Colley was also ordered last year to serve five years of supervised probation and was forbidden from engaging in physical punishment of children when he made his plea agreement.
Colley is being held in the Frederick County Detention Center, without bond.
